Oh ya, I think the other Tommy (Hill) did ok too
It was another night of …great weather and great racing at Hendry County Motorsports Park’s Autism Awareness Night. Gene Lasker and his Autism Awareness lettered Sprint Car spoke to the fans at intermission and took pictures with his car and signed autographs. Right after intermission the V-8 Thunder Stocks took to the track for their Trophy Dash, the young talents of Nick Osborne and Derik Rose showed the veterans how clean racing and lots of passing can take place at the same time and be exciting for the fans. Derik was patient and took his opportunities and brought home his first Dash trophy.
Next up the Street Stocks ran on a track that was starting to come in nicely with the Sprints Cars on Deck, the race was dominated by some guy in a pretty car with a 1H on the side, he looked kind of familiar. Gary Champion, Rick Osteen and John Bledsoe followed him under the checkered flag.
Now it was Sprint Car time, you could feel the excitement in the air as the cars pushed out on the track waiting to be started. There is something special about watching these powerful beasts getting push started, come to life and idle around the track as the other cars get started and somehow, they all end up in race formation ready to go. The audience was ready, the starter was ready and the pole sitter Danny Martin Jr was too ready as the first start was waved off. The second start was clean and the thunder started, some cars ran the low line and some sprayed the dirt up at the top of the track. Somewhere in the middle of all the dirt flying was the #02 of Gene Lasker charging from the back of the pack. Shane Kreidler held off the challenges from Tony Agin, Mike Schroeder and Gene Lasker to take home the big Trophy and the winners check.
Thunder Stocks knew that they had an exciting show to follow, as they sat patiently waiting on the back straight while the Sprint Car victory lane celebration continued, none knew that some of these cars would not see the checkered flag and at least one probably wont see a race track again. The word was out there was a bounty out on that guy that keeps winning in this class, some new faces were hoping to end the current win streak. John Bledsoe was on the pole in his familiar red Camaro, Scotty Kay Jr. was on the outside in his Championship winning car from a few years ago (more recently driven by his father) and Tommy Styer was in the J.R. Fitch owned #9 car starting on the inside of row two. Some guy in a black 5H started outside row two. Tommy Styer wasted no time taking the lead before the first lap was over and checked out. The next lap looked like a ‘mayhem’ commercial for an insurance company as everybody except the two leaders got together in turn one, Scotty Kay Jr ended up turned in the middle of the track, rear axle dug in the track as Nick Osborne did a good job of squaring up the un-avoidable heavy impact. Six cars were involved in bringing out the red flag, all the drivers were OK after a wild ride by some. No driver was upset with any other drivers, all said it was good aggressive racing. Scotty Kay Jr got to do what every child hates doing, calling home and saying, “Dad, I wrecked your car, but it wasn’t my fault”. After the race restarted it was all Tommy Styer in the #9, as lap traffic started to play a part in the race the black 5H started to reel in Styer. After leading 19 laps the Styer driven #9 had a pegged temperature gauge and a black 5h behind him with a solid front bumper. Going into turn one Styer got to feel the impact of that bumper and moved up the track and discovered a car beside him coming out of turn two, that pesky car then took the lead and saw the checkered flag first. The two cars exchanged paint down the back straight after the race, we think they were congratulating each other, or maybe not.
The Limited Late Model and Open Wheel Modifed race was a great battle between Bob Regula and Mark Thompson for second as John Bledsoe checked out in his third feature of the night thus earning John a trophy, a check and official Iron Man status.
Now it is time to do what I have been avoiding.
Ok, here it is,
(Tommy Hill, if you are reading this stop now and go do something else)
Ok, Tommy Hill wins a record 8th Thunder Stock race in a row, Tommy Hill wins another Street Stock Feature, Tommy Hill, Tommy Hill, Tommy Hill…… Can he be Stopped?
The next chance to stop the Tommy Hill runaway train is next Saturday Night April 20th, it is the first annual V-8 Thunder Stock Spring Challenge, 30 Laps and $500 to win.
